Durability Is Key When Choosing Coloured Gemstones
When making an engagement ring, gemstones can be a great alternative to diamonds, however not all gemstones are suitable for everyday wear. You need one that is durable and that will retain its beauty for years to come.
The Mohs Scale of Hardness
As a jewellery designer, durability is very important. Gemstone engagement rings are designed with gemstones graded on the Mohs scale of hardness, which tells us the level of resilience of one particular stone from another.
This scale consists of ten classifications with diamonds being rated the hardest at 10 and talc the softest at 1. Everything else falls somewhere in between.
Putting this into context, your fingernail rates as 2 while a piece of glass rates at 6 or 7.
Gemstones I Recommend For Engagement Rings
I recommend considering strength, beauty and hardness when choosing a gemstone. Different coloured gemstones have very different hardness values and it is important to know this before choosing one.
Of course, diamonds are the obvious choice for durability and, as there are many choices of coloured diamonds, these are the ideal option for a gemstone.
Sapphires rate at 9 on the Mohs scale and make stunning diamond alternatives as well as offering an impressive splash of colour. Due to their affordable price point, choosing a sapphire allows you to choose a larger centre stone, of any shape or cut.
Rubies also rate at 9 on the Mohs scale and make a sophisticated and classic centre stone choice. Their deep red colour symbolises love, suits all skin tones and looks particularly good when set in rose gold.
With their rich green hues and distinguished history, an emerald makes a fantastic choice for an engagement ring. While its low facet structure results in a less brilliant stone, it does showcase its prized and distinguished colour.
However, it is important to note that an emerald scores 7.5 - 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning that it is more likely to be damaged, so keep this in mind if choosing an emerald engagement ring.
Coloured stones are appealing on many levels but be aware that durability is key if you want your ring to last a lifetime.
